Banded Hedge Patterns
Gardens became formalised in Japan in the 15th Century, and hedges and fences were classified according to status. The grandest was the banded hedge, and it was used to hide and disguise. This motif was often mistaken for a wheatsheaf by Europeans.

Provenance:- Bessborough Collection.

30. Vase
Bow c.1750       H. 17.2cm, 6.75"
Of large baluster form, painted on one side with a phoenix in flight, butterflies and flowering sprays, on the other with peonies and bamboo rising from banded hedges, divided by two lobed Chinese landscape panels of buildings of European form, alternating with lobed panels of flowering prunus.
